FFP2 vs. Surgical Mask: What's the Difference?
Masks, masks, masks – but which one is right for me? FFP2 respirators and medical surgical masks may look similar at first glance, but they serve very different purposes. In this guide, we explain the key differences so you can make the right choice.
What is a Surgical Mask?
A medical surgical mask (also known as a mouth-nose cover or MNS) is a loosely fitting device that primarily protects other people from droplets and splashes produced when the wearer speaks, coughs or sneezes. It protects the environment – not primarily the wearer.
Properties of a Surgical Mask
- Standard: DIN EN 14683:2019 (Type I, Type II or Type IIR)
- Protection direction: Source protection (protecting others)
- Fit: Loosely fitting, no tight seal on the face
- Filter performance: Bacterial filtration rate 95–98% depending on type
- Type IIR: Additionally splash-resistant
- Typical use: Medical practices, hospitals, pharmacies, retail
What is an FFP2 Mask?
An FFP2 mask (Filtering Face Piece, protection level 2) is a respirator that protects both the wearer and the environment. It filters at least 94% of all particles from inhaled air and fits tightly to the face.
Properties of an FFP2 Mask
- Standard: EN 149:2001 + A1:2009
- Protection direction: Self-protection and source protection
- Fit: Tight seal on the face, no leakage gaps
- Filter performance: At least 94% of all airborne particles
- Typical use: Healthcare, nursing, industry, public transport

| Feature | Surgical Mask (Type IIR) | FFP2 Mask |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | DIN EN 14683:2019 | EN 149:2001 + A1:2009 |
| Protection for wearer | Low | High (>94%) |
| Protection for others | High | High |
| Fit | Loose | Tight |
| Breathing resistance | Low | Higher |
| Wearing comfort | Very high | High |
| Price | Low | Slightly higher |
| Typical use | Everyday, practice | High-risk areas, care |
When Should I Use Which Mask?
Surgical mask is the right choice when…
- you want to protect others, e.g. patients in a medical practice
- you need to wear the mask for extended periods and comfort is important
- you are out and about in everyday life (shopping, public buildings)
- you need Type IIR – with additional splash protection for medical environments
FFP2 mask is the right choice when…
- you want to protect yourself from aerosols or particles
- you work in healthcare or high-risk areas
- you care for people with weakened immune systems
- you work in dusty or pollutant-laden environments
Made in Germany – Why Quality Matters
With respiratory masks, reliable certifications and high-quality materials are essential. Our masks from Kela Schutzartikel are produced exclusively in Germany – with CE certification, UV-C treatment and Oeko-Tex certified materials.
Conclusion
Neither the FFP2 mask nor the surgical mask is fundamentally “better” – they serve different purposes. For maximum protection of the wearer, the FFP2 is the right choice. For source protection in everyday life or medical settings, a certified Type IIR surgical mask is ideal. In many situations, both masks actually complement each other perfectly.
